Alternative pop artist Veera Lummi is set to release her first album, “ZODIAC,” in early June to celebrate the growing light. The album is based on the 12 signs of the zodiac, each song created during its season. There are layers to be found in each sign making it an intriguing journey through the different season both around us and within us. The instrumentation of the album follows different qualities of the signs featuring Modulus Quartet’s ethereal strings, Alvin Lee Ryan’s punctuated drums and stunning shells by Steve Pretty, that tie the album closely to the natural world. The live performance has been co-created with Steve Pretty as a more intimate adaptation of the different signs and elements.
Born in Finland and currently based in London, Lummi is no stranger to the industry. She has had an extensive career as a composer for both film and television, explaining her knack for immersive production and gorgeous orchestration. With inspiration from Scandinavian artists such as Olafur Arnalds, Fever Ray and Little Dragon, Lummi has paved her own path in marrying contemporary electronic principles with full soundscapes, landing in the “experimental pop” sphere beautifully. In fact, her childhood immersed in anything from melancholic Finnish schlager and folk to Sibelius laid the groundwork for her sound. “I kept on playing Piazzola and singing Bulgarian choir music while expanding my CD collection with quirky electronics and pop such as Four Tet and Cinematic Orchestra,” she shares.
Her “subtle, dreamy scores” were featured in the film “Burning Gold” (Berlin Commercial Award shortlist) and “Crossing Tracks” (Tromso International Film Festival selection). Her debut EP Liminal was featured on CLASH Magazine among others and the tracks have gained airtime on BBC6, Amazing Radio and Aaja as well as Finnish YLE Vega and Radio Helsinki.
