A shilling a barrel we want,

and a shilling a barrel we’ll have

Kicking off First Light 2023 is a new unique song cycle celebrating the inspiring legacy of the herring girls’ protest over fair pay on Lowestoft beach in 1936.

Performed on that same beach as part of First Light Festival, by an intergenerational community choir from all across Lowestoft, this song cycle today asks: What would you stand up for? What would you sing for?

Composed by musical director Jessie Maryon Davies; with libretto by Hannah Jane Walker; co-created with the Herring Girls community choir.
