Whorl: ‘a pattern of spirals or concentric circles’

First Light artist-in-residence Steve Pretty welcomes the dawn with a set bridging the gap between our ancient musical past and our dynamic musical future.

With a unique setup combining conch shells, trumpet, percussion, found sounds, and cutting edge electronic augmentation of these acoustic instruments, Steve constructs evolving, meditative soundscapes recalling Brian Eno, Jon Hassell and Steve Reich.

Steve is best known as leader of Hackney Colliery Band, and for his podcast Steve Pretty On The Origin of the Pieces. He has collaborated with musicians as diverse as Angeliqué Kidjo, Mulatu Astatke and Amy Winehouse, worked as Musical Director at Shakespeare’s Globe and for Robin Ince and Brian Cox’s live shows, scored TV drama and much more.

Here he performs a rare solo set which recalls our most ancient, primal musical experiences as a species, whilst looking to the future.
