We would like artists to respond to the concept of a bird/nest box in ways that reflect their practice. It is envisaged that these would be temporary/ephemeral works but must withstand exhibiting in the open air/weather for several days. The more durable boxes will be taken to Carlton Marshes for an extended exhibition time.

Each artist will be supplied with a flatpack cardboard bird box measuring 30cm high to top roof ridge, 22cm wide and 20cm deep which can be used either to make your final outcome or used for development of ideas, or not used at all.

Please don’t feel restricted to using the cardboard box. We would welcome work on any scale and material.

Whilst care will be taken to install the boxes securely, please note the installations are in a public, outdoor location and may not be stewarded. Artists contributing boxes for First Flight do so at their own risk. First Light Festival C.I.C cannot be held liable for any damage or loss to artists work.

Lowestoft’s beach is the first landing post for a variety of birds that migrate from across the world to settle, breed and fulfil their lifecycle. In partnership with Suffolk Wildlife Trust and Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve, First Flight celebrates the region’s birdlife and spotlights the importance of the natural world and its ecosystems, especially habitats within an urban context.

The ‘First Flight’ project will also engage with shops and businesses in Lowestoft’s two Heritage Action Zones and with the town’s schools, to boost the connections between culture and nature, wellbeing and the natural world and the links between Lowestoft and Carlton Marshes Nature reserve.
