South Beach, Lowestoft
500 Miles 500 People 500 Dreams 500 Flags
Visit the Beach of Dreams – a spectacular installation of 500 individually designed silk flags on Lowestoft South Beach on 26th and 27th June.
Join us on the beach to experience this large-scale artwork that marks the beginning of an epic 500 mile walk from Lowestoft to Tilbury. Chosen and designed by the people of Suffolk and Essex, photos and drawings of the coastline are transformed by artists into hand-painted, naturally dyed silk pennants, each one representing a single mile on the winding walk that takes in this captivating coastline and river network. The installation mirrors the shape of the coastal route, allowing everyone to ‘walk’ the 500 miles!
Engaging with environmental themes and framed by the question “how can we creatively reimagine our future?” Beach of Dreams is a collaborative project devised by arts organisation Kinetika, that asks local people to voice their hopes and dreams for the future of this unique yet vulnerable coastline. The Beach of Dreams installation will be on the beach on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June to mark midsummer and the start of the 500 mile walk, with walkers taking part in the first stretch from Lowestoft to Southwold setting off at 12 noon on Sunday 27th June.
