Opening Parade: Winds of Change
11:00 Kicks off from Claremont Pier and ends at the Sunlight Stage
Saturday 18 June
This year’s Festival kicks off with a colourful procession along the promenade, and we’d love for you to be a part of it. We’re inviting you to march, dance, stomp and skip together with local schools and community groups. We’ll parade with our banners, wind torches and whirligigs along the Upper Esplanade towards Cliff Road, then we will drop down onto the beach and continue along the sand to the Sunlight Stage. There, we’ll all open this year’s Festival with a performance of John Ward’s The Light Returns, our festival anthem.
The parade theme, Winds of Change, takes inspiration from weather patterns around the world, and will see banners, giant recycled whirligigs and wind torches that have been made by local communities in the run up to the Festival.
If you’re joining us from the start, we’ll meet in the Wellington Esplanade Gardens opposite Claremont Pier, setting off at 11.00am. Make sure to dress in colourful clothing (face painting encouraged!), and bring something to bang, blow or make noise with.
