Welcome the Light – Man on the Moon

Each year our Welcome the Light project works with professional musicians, schools and community groups to open the festival with a rousing performance that showcases community spirit and the creative joy of music.

About

This year we are delighted that Francesca Warren a Lowestoft-born musical talent and Musical Director in UK theatre, has arranged a version of REM’s Man on the Moon to chime with our moon theme and 13 Moons festival parade.

In the months leading up to the festival, primary schools and groups including My Choir Rocks, Seagull community singers and musicians, Sing for the Soul, Sizewell Community Choir work with a score that Francesca provides and a guide track/video to rehearse to. The Norfolk and Suffolk Music Hub with music practitioner Tom Appleton runs a 90 minute workshop in each of the 6 schools, to learn the song, with new lyrics, and Helen Barnes, First Light’s Music Co-ordinator works with My Choir Rocks and community groups.

In the week leading up to the festival an open rehearsal takes place for all the participating groups – before the excitement of performing at the festival on the Sunlight Stage at noon along with Francesca on piano and stellar violinist and First Light resident musician Harriet Mackenzie on the violin.
