By the Light of the Moon: Secrets of the Moving Ocean

15:00

16:00

Why do eels travel thousands of miles to breed? How does the moon guide salmon home? Join Cefas scientists for a live, relaxed conversation about the extraordinary journeys made by ocean creatures.

About

Every year, billions of creatures make extraordinary journeys through our oceans, rivers and seas. From eels crossing the Atlantic, to salmon returning to the rivers where they were born, and squid and plankton responding to the pull of the moon. Migration is one of nature’s most astonishing stories.

In this relaxed, podcast-style conversation, scientists from Cefas, the UK government’s leading marine science agency, based right here in Lowestoft, will share the stories behind these remarkable migrations. Expect fascinating insights, surprising facts, and questions you never thought to ask. With Dr David Righton (eels), Dr Serena Wright (tuna), Dr Amy Lovegrove (plankton) and Dr Alan Walker (salmon)!

Working with local schools ahead of the festival, Cefas will be gathering questions from children about ocean life. Those questions will help shape the discussion on the day alongside live questions from the audience.

Whether you’re a curious first-timer or a seasoned ocean enthusiast, come along, bring your questions and join the conversation.

Presented by Cefas, an executive agency of Defra.
