About
The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is a world-leading marine science agency and executive agency of Defra. Founded in 1902 in Lowestoft, Cefas employs around 600 scientists, engineers, mathematicians and specialists across laboratories in Lowestoft and Weymouth.
Cefas collects, manages and interprets data on the aquatic environment, biodiversity and fisheries. Our cutting-edge research supports government policy on sustainable fisheries, marine biodiversity, climate change, clean energy and food security, helping to ensure healthy and productive rivers, seas and oceans for future generations.
At First Light Festival 2026, Cefas brings the wonders of aquatic science directly to you. Visit our stand to get hands-on with plankton, some of the ocean’s smallest but most vital creatures and discover how the moon influences the migration of aquatic animals. You can also join the conversation about offshore marine renewable energy, exploring the opportunities and challenges it presents for our marine environment.
