Joey Herzfield Trio
Norwich-based songwriter Joey Herzfeld has honed an distinctive style.
About
Inspired by the story-telling character songs of Randy Newman, the sound-world of Tom Waits, the wordplay of Tom Lehrer and the art-school experiments of Brian Eno, Joey hones his particular style.
During his twenties Joey gigged extensively with Hooverville, a swaggering six-piece “cabaret-rock” band. Though the songs were studiously crafted on piano live performances were raucous. The band was tight but frontman Joey, un-tethered by an instrument, would writhe and scream. In his thirties Joey strapped on an accordion to form the folkier So- Called Friends. Banjo replaced guitar, brushes replaced sticks. Still, despite the campfire instrumentation, the punk spirit and dark humour prevailed.
Since moving to Norwich Joey has (lightly) curbed his former theatrics to play piano while singing. He can still get in people’s faces if he dons the accordion but there’s considerably less writhing. Now in his forties, after decades of songwriting, Joey is pleasantly perplexed to find himself more prolific than ever. He regularly gigs both solo and with a range of gifted collaborators – including the exceptional players in this trio.
